postheadericon AT&T and Microsoft to bring enterprise-grade security, speed and reliability to cloud for businesses

DALLAS Sept . 18 , 2013 — AT&T ** and Microsoft Corp. today announced they will deliver a security-enhanced and reliable cloud solution that will allow enterprise customers to connect to Microsoft’s cloud platform using a private network.

The new solution will use breakthrough cloud integration technology from AT&T to pair virtual private networking with Microsoft’s industry-leading Windows Azure cloud platform. Customers of the solution are expected to benefit from the enterprise-grade security of virtual private networking, with as much as 50 percent lower latency than the public Internet, and access to cloud resources from any site using almost any wired or wireless device.

“This is a game changer for businesses that have been seeking a more secure way to reap the benefits of cloud services,” said Andy Geisse, CEO, AT&T Business Solutions. “By bringing the security and performance of our virtual private network to Windows Azure, we expect to energize enterprise demand for cloud solutions.”

Enterprises continue to cite concerns about security and reliable performance in their decision to adopt cloud computing. Working together, Microsoft and AT&T will address these concerns by enabling enterprise customers to quickly and reliably connect applications and services from their own datacenters (private clouds) to the Windows Azure cloud service using the protective confines and high transmission speeds of a highly-secure virtual private network.

AT&T’s cloud integration technology, AT&T NetBond, bonds networking and computing resources together and automates functions that are often performed manually. It allows the network and compute resources to flex in tandem to support the fluctuating demands on systems that enterprise cloud users often experience throughout the year. AT&T customers are already able to take advantage of the technology with AT&T’s own cloud offers.

The new cloud solution takes advantage of the Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology underpinning AT&T’s virtual private network solution. According to independent research firm Forrester Research Inc., 70 percent of multinational enterprises have already adopted global MPLS services*, high-performance networks that make it easy to create secure, virtual links between multiple geographic locations.

“There’s no question that the time for cloud computing is now, and it’s critical we help enterprises embrace the cloud on their terms,” said Satya Nadella, executive vice president of Cloud and Enterprise for Microsoft. “Through this strategic alliance with AT&T, we can reduce the barriers to entry for cloud computing by providing a more secure and reliable connectivity option for enterprise customers, accelerating the growth of cloud computing and the rapid adoption of Windows Azure.”

AT&T serves 3.5 million business customers and is the leading provider of IP-based services to multinational corporations, providing MPLS-based IP services to 187 countries, which represent 99 percent of the world’s economy. According to independent research firm Forrester, AT&T is a global leader in managed global MPLS services.* Similarly, Microsoft is a leader in the enterprise cloud space, with more than 50 percent of the Fortune 500 using Windows Azure and an unparalleled adoption rate at nearly 1,000 customers per day.

The new integrated solution is expected to be available in first half of 2014.

postheadericon Microsoft releases global survey revealing widespread belief in developing and developed nations that personal technology is transforming lives for the better

DAVOS, Switzerland — Jan. 24, 2014 — A new global survey of Internet users conducted by Microsoft Corp. reveals distinct regional findings and differing viewpoints between the developed and developing world. However, overwhelmingly the more than 10,000 people surveyed from 10 nations said they embrace personal technology, particularly in emerging markets, and see it as the foundation of innovation and economic empowerment.

Microsoft unveiled the results of its new survey today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in the report titled, “Views from Around the Globe: How Personal Technology is Changing Our Lives.”

Mark Penn, Microsoft Executive Vice President of Advertising and Strategy, presented the poll’s findings followed by a panel discussion moderated by award-winning journalist and author Maria Bartiromo. The panel included Marc R. Benioff, chairman and CEO, Salesforce.com; Maurice Lévy, chairman and CEO, Publicis Group; Bill McDermott, co-CEO, SAP; Alan Murray, president, Pew Research Center; and former U.S. Treasury Secretary and current Charles W. Elliot university professor, Harvard University, Lawrence H. Summers.

“Whether you live in a world capital or a remote village, personal technology is seen as empowering and as a vehicle to individual economic growth,” Penn said. “Despite varying rates of personal technology adoption and cultural differences, there is an overwhelming sense globally that improvements are being experienced across the board.”

Among the key findings of the study are these:

• A majority of the people surveyed around the world believe that personal technology has the most positive impact on innovation in business and empowering people to start a new business.

• People surveyed in developing countries — especially Brazil, Russia, India and China — believe that personal technology is creating job opportunities and helping bridge economic gaps.

• People in China say that personal technology has positively impacted personal freedom more than people in any other country surveyed.

• Those in developing countries — especially India — say that personal technology is improving education, health and healthcare.

• In Brazil, people say that personal technology had a strong impact on arts and culture.

• In China and India, they say their quality of life has improved due to personal technology.

Although personal technology was seen overwhelmingly as a positive force in both developed and developing countries, there were concerns that focused on personal safety and security, family bonds, and, most significantly, privacy. Interestingly, the survey found that the developing countries are more willing to trade privacy for security. Despite privacy concerns, however, nearly three-quarters of parents around the world want their children to have more, not less, access to personal technology. This is particularly true in developing countries, where parents are especially supportive of increased access to technology. Opinions are mixed in developed countries, where more parents feel there should be limits to technology access.

About the poll

The Microsoft poll was conducted between Dec. 26, 2013, and Jan. 3, 2014, and surveyed 10,009 Internet users in the United States, France, Brazil, Russia, China, India, Japan, Germany, Mexico and Turkey. The results were then weighted based on the size of the Internet populations in each of the 10 countries. The full survey findings and comprehensive analysis of the poll can be found at http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_blog/archive/2014/01/23/personal-technology-is-changing-lives-around-the-world-what-we-learned-from-talking-to-10-000-people-in-10-countries.aspx.

postheadericon DD-WRT Routers for HideMyAss OpenVPN Now Supported

Best OpenVPN DD-WRT HideMyAss Routers - Wireless-AC

HideMyAss OpenVPN DD-WRT FlashRouters

Big news for fans of both online privacy and open source firmware: OpenVPN is now fully supported on our line of DD-WRT flashed routers designed to work with one of your favorite VPN service providers, HideMyAss.

Up until recently, if you wanted to enjoy OpenVPN on your HideMyAss FlashRouter, you chose a Tomato firmware router or you were required to use PPTP and L2TP connections only. Now, after much tweaking, testing, trial, error, and retesting, we’re finally confident enough to offer and support a full DD-WRT HideMyAss OpenVPN solution.

The Difference Between OpenVPN & PPTP For HideMyAss Users

So you may be asking, what are all those protocols. Why would one prefer OpenVPN versus PPTP?

According to Wikipedia’s PPTP page:

PPTP has been the subject of many security analyses and serious security vulnerabilities have been found in the protocol. The known vulnerabilities relate to the underlying PPP authentication protocols used, the design of the MPPE protocol as well as the integration between MPPE and PPP authentication for session key establishment. PPTP is (as of October 2012) considered cryptographically broken and its use is no longer recommended by Microsoft.

So that sounds like more tech gibberish to most. Basically, PPTP is a VPN protocol/connection type that is easier to implement. PPTP has long been integrated into Windows-based devices and Apple devices without any further installation. However, that ease of use also makes it less secure generally. PPTP VPN connections are still of great use to many users around the globe. PPTP VPN is better than using no VPN connection at all and still provides an anonymous IP address in the country of your choosing, which allows for the unblocking of geographically restricted content for users. OpenVPN is simply a more secure, open-source based project that has some of the best and brightest in the IT security world preferring it.

So basically, you will be trading the simplicity of use with PPTP for the advanced security with OpenVPN. And isn’t security the most important concern when it comes to networking in the modern world? While we always have wanted to fully support this option, it took us years of testing to find stable, suitable setups that our team could replicate, create setup guides for and be able to support with ease.

Multiple HideMyAss OpenVPN Setup Options

We are introducing two methods of OpenVPN support for HMA connections at this time with some solid benefits to both connection methods.

Option #1: HMA OpenVPN Command Line Installer

If you navigate to your HMA account area on their website, then go to Download & Setup, you will notice an area specifically designated for DD-WRT router setups the DD-WRT command line installation generator. The first steps are fairly self explanatory and quite simple. Enter your regular HMA password in the specified field (NOT your PPTP password), then select your preferred server location using the radio button option. You can choose a specific HMA server in your preferred location, or  you can allow the installer to select a server randomly if you like. Our configuration specialists make a few final customizations to all HMA routers before we ship them out to customers. This allows users to then generate their account-specific command line, and immediately run the command on their FlashRouter.

FlashRouters Support is more than happy to complete the entire command line installation before an order is shipped for any HMA customers who desire. By no means require your account information, to configure your HMA router, however you may leave your information in the SSL-secure Order Comments section when checking out with your HMA router if you would like a completely out of the box configuration.

No need to worry about changing your HMA VPN server location after receiving your FlashRouter. Once our routers are primed with the HMA command line installation, generate server configurations for any location you desire and then run them on your router to connect to your new preferred geographical location.

Option #2: HMA OpenVPN DD-WRT Startup Script Method

This option is based on HMA’s official router setup tutorials in detail. Not as clean and simple as HMA’s command line installer, it is quite effective and allows for some truly amazing advanced setup setup options.

With the extended scripting method, FlashRouters Support will still set up everything for you in the router so when you receive your new device you simply have to input your HMA username, password, and in the case of the extended script your preferred server locations. When we say locations, that is not a typo. This often requested feature for advanced Internet anonymity is now available. With this extended script you can actually input several HMA servers at once, then your HMA DD-WRT router will connect to one of your preferred servers at random each time you start up the router and connect.

Utilizing this method you can make it so that you are not always connecting through the same VPN server address. This round robin connection setup to HMA servers makes it even harder for anyone who might be trying to peek to pin you down. Keep your IP address randomized every time you connect.

The HMA DD-WRT Script Method allows you the option to set different servers within a single location as well, in case one fails to connect, the script will attempt to connect to the next server in line. You may also setup connection with servers in different US states or countries. If your foremost concern is security and anonymity rather than the benefit of gaining access to content in a specific localized region, then you can keep connecting to VPN in different countries randomly each time you  start the VPN connection.

Again the FlashRouter support team is more than happy to setup the entire extended script method for you before shipment. When placing your order for an HMA router, specify your desire in the Comments section. If you would like to take advantage of the advanced scripting method out-of-the-box, please provide your HMA account information with your list of favorite HMA server locations to input on your FlashRouter. If you don’t provide this info, a setup guide will always be included.

postheadericon How To Turn Off WiFi on a DD-WRT Router With the Press of a Button (FlashRouters FAQ)

When popular questions DD-WRT & router keep recurring, we try our best to address them with a FlashRouters FAQ post because we know if one person wants to know something, 10 others probably have the same question.

Today’s DDWRT FAQ: Turning Off WiFi

Dear FlashRouters,

I love my DD-WRT router, but I’m not sure how to turn off the WiFi when I need to. I don’t like the idea of my WiFi broadcasting while I sleep. I also would like to set a deadline when the kids can even use the Internet by completely shutting it off.

Can you tell me what to do? Is there an easy to do to turn off my WiFi?

-Confused in Columbus

How to Turn Off WiFi Radio On A DD-WRT Router

So you are confused, Confused? Well these are confusing times. But DD-WRT offers a few easy options that you can utilize for turning off the WiFi completely or just disabling the public broadcast of a wireless signal.

Disable WiFi in a Wireless Router

Under the Services tab Scroll down SES/AOSS/EZ-SETUP/WPS Button on the router that allows you to turn the radio on and off.

How To Create a Wireless Off Button on a WiFi Router

Results of Turning WiFi Radio Off

Once this setting is saved, and the button is pressed, the wireless network will no longer be accessible until this button is turned on. As long as no one else knows about it, in the house, the control of WiFi within your home will be completely yours Confused.

This makes the WPS/AOSS/EZ-SETUP button on the router now a functional button. When flashing to DD-WRT, this button becomes non-functional as WPS is disabled by default within DD-WRT. The reason for disabling WPS and AOSS is that WPS is a very simple to crack, major security flaw that should never be used.

Disable the SSID/Wireless Network Name from Being Visible

With the SSID disabling option, you will be turning off the public transmission of the wireless network. So the advantage of this option, is that the wireless will still exist but will be invisible to guests or WiFi snoops. Only those who know the exact SSID and can type it in manually will have access to it.

The best way to set up the clients you want access to this network is to allow for transmission while you are setting up the router and then once those needs are met, disable the SSID broadcast as explained below.

  1. Click Wireless Tab.
  2. You should then be on the Basic Settings Tab but if you are not click the Basic Settings Tab.
  3. Find the Wireless SSID Broadcast and choose the radial button for Disable.
  4. Scroll to the bottom. Click Save then Apply.
  5. Clicking Apply will refresh the wireless settings and the network should not longer be visible.

REDMOND, Wash. — Jan. 16, 2014 — RCS MediaGroup, the leading Italian multimedia publishing company, primarily operating in Italy and Spain, has modernized and unified its communications infrastructure and enabled flexible, cloud-based collaboration through a comprehensive Microsoft technology solution that includes Microsoft Office 365, Windows Azure, Microsoft Lync 2013, Windows Server 2012 and Microsoft SharePoint 2013.

“With the benefits of a consistent approach for the end user, complete transparency for the delivery and the availability of Office applications, there will be more and more opportunities for our employees to continue to deliver new, innovative ideas,” said Umberto Tonelli, chief information officer of RCS MediaGroup. “For the IT department, this is a win-win situation; we are protecting our investments in technology, diminishing the risk of a massive deployment and finding new space to introduce innovation.”

RCS, longtime partner with Microsoft, turned to Microsoft Corp. because it needed to modernize its existing infrastructure while maintaining the security and quality of its business data and systems. With Microsoft cloud solutions, RCS has benefited from security-enhanced cloud storage, improved its disaster preparedness through the protection of relevant assets such as digitized historical archives of newspapers, simplified its communications infrastructure, and provided agile project management offerings for a mobile, distributed workforce that is using these solutions to manage more than 200 projects within its Digital Product Development Department. Moreover, using modern Windows apps and storage in the cloud, RCS has developed a solution for the sales force of its book publishing company, RCS Libri, that allows sales agents to retrieve the new books catalogue while on the go and present it interactively to their customers. Using the modern Windows app, they can directly place orders from the catalogue in front of the customer, dramatically reducing the selling cycle. After an agent’s visit, the modern Windows app allows the customer to review the catalog through a Web interface and place additional orders. The sales agents benefit as well from using Office 365 and Lync to communicate with their network, within and outside RCS.

Moreover, the new platform provides the marketing teams with a new collaborative environment, based on Office 365, where they can invite selected customers to focus groups to discuss and vote on the new digital products that RCS is planning to release.

Using a combination of Office 365 cloud environment and SharePoint 2013 on-premises, RCS will transform its intranet from a pure top-down communications tool to an interactive self-service feature for virtual desk. In addition to company information and self-service features for administrative tasks, it provides all employees with tools that support their business activities, allow them to collaborate with their network, contribute to and search the enterprise knowledge base, access their personal productivity tools (email, calendar, tasks, etc.), and manage their personal profile, information and files. The integrated solution enables RCS employees to share documents and images, manage projects, and communicate from virtually any location with mobile technology tools that support access from smartphones, tablets and other devices. Employees located in Italy can use Lync to quickly and easily connect with fellow employees in other locations around the world, such as the U.S., Spain, Mexico and China, as well as with vendors and partners. Ultimately, the company has been able to create a better and more productive working environment for its employees.

Better Call Saul- Streaming Netflix Instant 2014

Better Call Saul

New to Netflix Instant Streaming in 2014

Maybe you’ve heard about Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad spin-off that will star Bob Odenkirk as everyone’s favorite slime-ball lawyer, Saul Goodman. AMC recently announced that Better Call Saul‘s premiere will take place sometime in November.

More importantly for fans of Netflix streaming, Netflix has struck a deal with Sony Pictures Television that will allow them to start airing season one of Better Call Saul before the second season premieres on AMC. As a big portion of Breaking Bad‘s success came from binge-watchers streaming episodes on Netflix, giving these viewers the chance to view this season immediately after it ends as opposed to waiting (and eventually being a year behind cable viewers) is a nice tip of the hat. While audiences streaming on Netflix won’t be able to watch Better Call Saul right away, it’s still an encouraging development that makes us think other studios are getting used to the idea that Netflix Instant is here to stay.

The special attention AMC has given to Netflix with Better Call Saul proves just how influential this streaming service has become. One can look no further to the success of Netflix Instant original series like House of Cards & Orange is The New Black to see how a future without cable TV is a definite possibility. As viewers head towards the binge-watching mindset as opposed to waiting week-to-week for episodes to premiere, the importance of having a high-performance wireless router set-up will be very clear.

Improve Netflix Instant Streaming Experience With Powerful Router

Streaming HD video is a bandwidth intensive activity that puts major stress on a wireless home network. Our wireless routers are popular with heavy Netflix users because they are designed to handle high-volume jobs with ease. With a FlashRouter, you can extend your wireless range, tweak wireless sensitivity, control your bandwidth allocation, and add layers of advanced security. How do we achieve all this? By flashing our routers with DD-WRT & Tomato firmware, open-source replacement firmwares that boost a router’s functionality and feature-set.

Check out our recent best-sellers of 2013 list to find some of our most popular devices, such as the beloved Cisco Linksys E4200 DD-WRT, which handily took the top spot (with it’s Tomato companion earning a slot on the list as well). Other networking favorites include the towering Tomato behemoth known as the Asus RT-N66U Dark Knight Tomato Router, and our latest next generation Wireless-AC device, the Netgear R6300 DD-WRT Router.

It’s also worth mentioning that we’re affiliated with a number of VPN service providers who can not only make your online experience safer, but can also keep you in touch with your Netflix streaming account even when you’re in countries where Netflix isn’t available. By tunneling your online information through secure servers all over the world, VPNs also allow you to trick your computer into thinking it’s wherever you want it to be, allowing you access to geographically restricted material. For more information, check out one of our many articles about accessing Netflix from places like Korea or Dubai or South Africa.

If you’d like some help choosing the VPN that best suits you, we recommend checking our Supported Provider List. We can customize our routers for any of the VPNs on that list, which saves you a lot of the time and trouble that comes with installing the VPN software on your own. Don’t end up with a bricked router when we can handle all of the tough stuff for you.

Some Like It Hot- Classic Films on Netflix Instant Streaming

Some Like It Hot: New Netflix Instant Streaming Movies

Classic Films Added to Netflix Instant Streaming in 2014

Late ’50s/Early ’60s classics – West Side Story/Some Like It Hot/Breakfast at Tiffany’s –  There was some minor hysteria about the amount of movies Netflix Instant lost during the switchover from 2013 to 2014, but surely the addition of these beloved classics from 1959 to 1961 softens the blow. Revel in the magic of this era of the cinema, when brilliant screenwriting and endless, almost effortless wit seemed to cascade out of the screen (we’re obviously not including Mickey Rooney’s horrifying Asian caricature when we wax nauseatingly nostalgic over his era).

Mel Brooks’ Spoofs – High Anxiety/Spaceballs – If we had our choice of Mel Brooks’ movies to add to Netflix Instant, we’d almost certainly go with Young Frankenstein or Blazing Saddles, but these are fine choices as well. High Anxiety‘s pitch-perfect take on the gradually increasing hysteria of Hitchcock movies and Spaceballs‘ unabashed silliness find the legendary writer/director/actor in fine, freewheeling Mel Brooks form.

Raging Bull: New Netflix Instant Streaming Video

Raging Bull Added to Netflix Streaming

Raging Bull – What more is there to say about this one? Raging Bull is a renowned American classic, tracking former boxer Jake La Motta’s rise and downfall with all of the grit and intensity that is Martin Scorcese’s stock-in-trade. Hopefully, you’ve all seen it by now, and if you have, it’s worth watching again. If not, what are you waiting for?

New Netflix Instant Streaming Videos in 2014

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters/Jack Reacher – We’re not exactly recommending Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters or Jack Reacher when we highlight them here. Let’s be honest though, these are the sorts of movies you mindlessly watch when they’re free, and if you’ve cut the cord on your cable bill, this level of movie fits perfectly into the “TNT/TBS/FX on a Saturday” mold.  And Werner Herzog is in Jack Reacher! That alone makes it worth a stream.

The Attack – Now that we’ve got the brain-dead stuff out of the way, it’s time to get to the “eat-your-veggies” material. Yes, a movie about an Arab surgeon who learns that his wife is responsible for a recent suicide bombing in Israel is not a light-hearted frolic at the ol’ cinema, but it’s a powerful work that’s well worth your time, if you can work up the nerve to watch it.

The Hunt – If you’re one of the many people who couldn’t stop watching Hannibal on NBC last year, perhaps you’d be interested to see its titular star, Mads Mikkelsen, in a decidedly less villainous role. The Hunt tells the heartbreaking story of a teacher (Mikkelsen) whose world crumbles around him after he’s falsely accused of pedophilia. Not really a light-hearted alternative to Hannibal, but a good showcase for Mikkelsen’s considerable range.

Maron – We were, and remain, big fans of Thinky Pain, Marc Maron’s comedy hour that premiered on Netflix Instant last year, and we’re longtime devotees to his beloved, groundbreaking WTF podcast, so it only makes sense that we’re recommending his new IFC sitcom. Those familiar with Maron’s hilariously neurotic, bitter, and twisted point of view will find plenty to love here.
