postheadericon IBM and Microsoft to offer greater choice in the hybrid cloud

ARMONK, NY and REDMOND, WA — October 22, 2014 — IBM and Microsoft announced today that they are working together to provide their respective enterprise software on Microsoft Azure and IBM Cloud. As adoption of hybrid cloud computing accelerates, this relationship will give clients, partners and developers more choice in the cloud, helping them drive new business opportunities, spur innovation and reduce costs.

Specifically, the newly announced relationship provides the following client benefits:

  • IBM and Microsoft will make key IBM middleware such as WebSphere Liberty, MQ, and DB2 available on Microsoft Azure.
  • Windows Server and SQL Server will be offered on IBM Cloud.
  • IBM and Microsoft are working together to deliver a Microsoft .NET runtime for IBM’s Bluemix cloud development platform.
  • To support hybrid cloud deployments, IBM will expand support of its software running on Windows Server Hyper-V, and the companies plan to make IBM Pure Application Service available on Azure.

“Together we are creating new opportunities to drive innovation in hybrid cloud,” said Robert LeBlanc, Senior Vice President, Software and Cloud Solutions Group, IBM. “This agreement reinforces IBM’s strategy in providing open cloud technology for the enterprise. Clients will now gain unprecedented access to IBM’s leading middleware and will have an even greater level of choice over the tools that they use to build and deploy their cloud environments.”

“Microsoft is committed to helping enterprise customers realize the tremendous benefits of cloud computing across their own systems, partner clouds and Microsoft Azure,” said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president, Cloud and Enterprise, Microsoft. “With this agreement more customers will be able to take advantage of the hyper-scale, enterprise performance and hybrid capabilities of Azure.”

IBM and Microsoft will make key products within IBM’s enterprise-proven middleware software portfolio, including WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere MQ and DB2 database software, available in the Microsoft Azure Virtual Machines service for development and production deployment.

Microsoft and IBM are working together to provide .NET runtimes, along with relevant tooling, in IBM Bluemix, IBM’s open cloud platform-as-a-service. This could open the door for millions of .NET developers to build applications at scale for clients on IBM’s cloud platform. The companies will begin with a limited preview offering of .NET operating within Bluemix.

The companies will enable customers to bring their own software licenses to the IBM and Microsoft clouds, helping customers avoid extra cost. Microsoft will also offer IBM middleware software licenses, such as WebSphere Liberty, MQ and DB2, to Azure customers with pay-per-use pricing.

The companies also plan to make IBM Pure Application Service available on both Microsoft Azure and IBM SoftLayer for automated deployment, configuration and license management in a hybrid cloud environment.

IBM SoftLayer currently provides and supports a wide range of Microsoft software, including Windows Server, Hyper-V, WebMatrix, Windows Firewall, SQL Server and others.

postheadericon HBOGO & CBS All Access A La Carte: The End of Overpriced Cable?

Big developments from HBO and CBS

HBO & CBS A La Carte Packages

Anyone who has been paying even casual attention to television trends could sense some big changes coming. Cord-cutters are ditching cable packages left and right; streaming networks are letting people share passwords; in short, cable companies don’t have the same advantageous position that they once had with consumers.

Sensing the obviously shifting tides, a couple of major television networks are trying to demonstrate their viability in this new landscape, and it could signal some serious changes about the way consumers enjoy their TV.

Get CBS All Access & HBOGO Without A Cable Subscription

While HBO was the most exciting for many, CBS was first to announce availability of CBS programming without a Cable package with CBS All Access. HBOGO has not announced a date, how they plan to implement it and what the price will be (although estimates seem to be in the $ 15 range).

How To Unblock CBS All Access Outside the USA

About CBS All Access

Pros: Though they’ve got plenty of hugely popular shows to brag about, we wouldn’t have guessed CBS would have been the next in line to make a similar offer and show initiative here. But here they are, offering their own a la carte streaming service called CBS All Access letting you enjoy all your city-based variations of NCIS & CSI, The Good Wife, Elementary, and The Big Bang Theory without taking on a whole pricey cable package.

In the US CBS is available over the air as well for free but CBS All Access will allow streaming on demand the next day for new episodes after a show is on.

Pros: Previous and current episodes of all the top CBS shows will be available on demand plus a library of classic shows such as all the Star Treks such as the original Star Trek, Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Deep Space Nine, as well as FlashRouter favorites MacGyver, Twin Peaks, The Twilight Zone, Mission: Impossible and Sabrina The Teenage Witch (we all have guilty pleasures!)

Streaming CBS All Access Features with VPN Outside the USA
Streaming CBS All Access Cons: CBS All Access will not be offering live telecasts of most shows including their stable of sports events so if you thought you were getting all NFL games for $ 5.99, you are out of luck. You will be able to watch some awards shows and Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in their LIVE glory.

About HBOGo

Something like this has been in the offing for a while, and it looks like HBO will go down as the first pay TV channel to pull the trigger. Soon enough, you’ll be able to get HBO without a corresponding cable package. It’s HBO a la carte. Game of Thrones, Girls, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, all available to stream without paying for, you know, hundreds of other channels you don’t care about.

How to Stream HBOGO with a VPN Service on Roku or AppleTV

Using HBOGO & CBS All Access with VPN & VPN Routers

Where Will HBOGO & CBS on Demand Be Available? That is the real question!

CBS All Access & HBOGO availability will be limited to users in the US and users with US IP addresses. So if you’re not in America, you’re going to need VPN service with high-speed VPN servers like OverPlayVPNHide MyAss, IPVanish, PrivateInternetAccess to get access to these channels, plus a quality VPN capable router to enable these streaming services on all your favorite devices like iPads, Rokus, AppleTVs, laptops, Chromebooks and more!

Plus a high quality router can improve or keep the streaming quality at its best. That last point applies to people who are in America as well. Basically, everyone should go to our recent best-sellers of September list and check out the world-class VPNs and routers that are revolutionizing wireless networks all over the world!

Now, Will Other Networks Follow Suit?

This news has already led to an onslaught of pieces speculating about the end of the conventional cable bill (a category this post admittedly falls into). As dyed-in-the-wool cord-cutters, we’re excited too, but before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s consider a few things…

For starters, just because it makes sense for HBO and CBS to offer a web streaming service, doesn’t mean other, less popular channels are likely to follow suit. As we said above, HBO has Game of Thrones and CBS has The Big Bang Theory, two of the most popular shows running. The impetus to get a little adventurous exists for them where a flailing network like NBC is likely to be more cautious.

Secondly, there are those that speculate that a purely a la carte cable package could end up costing you more than a regular cable package. Sure, you can pick your favorites and keep it relatively cheap, but you’ll be losing out on a lot the mid-range channels that you may not have realized bolster your viewing experience. But if the goal is to pay for only what you want, that dream seems to be getting closer and closer with these announcements.

Shellshock Bug

The Shellshock Bug: Does it Affect DD-WRT & Tomato?

Another day, another threat to your online security, this one coming in the form of a bug named “Shellshock” by Security Researchers.

Naturally, we want to give our users a comprehensive sense of this new threat and provide some information and assurances about our software. So please read on to learn more about Shellshock and why FlashRouters are as safe as ever.

What Is the Shellshock Bug?

Expectedly, the explanation for the bug is dry and technical, so we’ll direct you to this invaluable Engadget article for a more specific answer and give you the important details:

Shellshock, presumably so named because it affects shells, is a bug that, well, affects shells. Shells are software that helps your computers and assorted devices interpret text so that you can understand the text and actually use the device the software is on.

And here’s where the dangerous part comes in: if an attacker requests any information from your router, security camera, or smart device that is using a BASH (Bourne Again SHell) shell, then the attacker can then add malware, allowing them to access sensitive files, activate your devices, use them, delete things, basically anything you can do on your own, and certainly things you wouldn’t want a stranger doing.

So yes, the Shellshock bug is a bit scary, so of course we take it very seriously.

Are FlashRouters Affected By the Shellshock Bug?

FlashRouters now offers Fedex Overnight and International Express Shipping

FlashRouters Tomato & DD-WRT Routers

Short answer: No.

Okay, maybe you deserve a little more: according to our in-house testing and multiple DD-WRT & TomatoUSB community reports, we have found that the Shellshock vulnerability will not work on a DD-WRT or TomatoUSB installed router.

As we mentioned above, the vulnerability is based on the Bourne Again Shell (or BASH), but DD-WRT & Tomato firmware use BusyBox which is confirmed to not have this issue.

That said, if you’re using Optware on your DD-WRT router,  it is recommended you turn that feature off, as that implementation is BASH based. Other than that, take comfort, FlashRouters users: as ever, our devices stand up to the test where others fail.

It's National Cyber Security Month

National Cyber Security Awareness Month

Hey folks! Whether you were aware of it or not, it’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month!

That’s right. For all of October, you’re encouraged to batten down the hatches on your network and help others learn how to do the same.

But, and you might be expecting us to say this, every month is cyber security awareness month at FlashRouters. So, as usual, we’ve got some practical advice for keeping yourself safe online.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month

First, a little background on National Cyber Security Awareness Month…

It’s officially the eleventh year that we’ve been celebrating National Cyber Security Awareness month, as the Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security alliance first collaborated on this idea back in 2003. The idea is basically as simple as it sounds: people can celebrate this month through a series of suggested behaviors centered around promoting online safety.

This year’s theme is “Our Shared Responsibility”, and the organizers have a whole bunch of recommendations about how you can participate (taken from the DHS website).

Week One: Oct 1-3
Promoting Online Safety with the Stop.Think.Connect.™ Campaign
Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, and everyone can take a few simple steps to make the Internet more secure. This week will also highlight efforts related to Executive Order 13636 to strengthen the security and resilience of the nation’s critical infrastructure.
Week Two: October 6-10 Secure Development of IT Products Building security into information technology products, including the phones, tablets, and computers we use every day, is key to enhanced cybersecurity.
Week Three: October 13-17
Critical Infrastructure and the Internet of Things
Highlights the importance of protecting critical infrastructure and properly securing all devices, including household items, that are connected to the Internet.
Week Four: October 20-24
Cybersecurity for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses and Entrepreneurs
Showcases what emerging and established businesses can do to protect their organization, customers, and employees.
Week Five: October 27-31
Cyber Crime and Law Enforcement
Working with law enforcement to combat cyber crime and educate the public on how to protect themselves from online crime.

Now, obviously, we’re publishing part of the way through Cyber Security Awareness Month, but you can still catch up! In fact, we’ve got a few ideas ourselves below…

Celebrate National Cyber Security Awareness Month w/ a VPN & a FlashRouter

Best VPN Service Providers

FlashRouter-Ready VPNs

FlashRouters has a fairly simple protocol for staying safe online: we keep our passwords varied and recorded somewhere would-be identity thieves cannot access.

But the centerpiece of our cyber security plan, and any good cyber security plan , is a trustworthy VPN.

VPNs, or Virtual Private Networks, create a safe way to do everything you want to do online without worrying about compromising your security. When you log into your VPN, all of your online info is tunneled through encrypted servers set up all over the world by your VPN service. Send sensitive e-mails and enter your credit card number without fear, all thanks to VPNs.

And at FlashRouters, we’re affiliated with some of the best of the best. Check them out on our official supported provider list, and find the VPN that best suits you.

Best FlashRouters for VPNs

Of course, if you want to get the most out of your VPN, then you’re going to need a FlashRouter.

What’s a FlashRouter, you ask?

As the video explains, a FlashRouter is a surefire way to revolutionize your network. Any one of our DD-WRT or Tomato-flashed routers is guaranteed to improve your network’s speed, power, and versatility.

When used in conjunction with a VPN, there’s no limit to what you can do. Save your old router, and use our popular dual router setup, which allows you to switch back and forth between one dedicated VPN and your normal, day-to-day network with incredible ease. If you’re subscribed to any VPN service on our official supported provider list, your FlashRouter will show up ready to work with your VPN service. No tricky VPN installation processes necessary.

As we said above, you can’t go wrong with a FlashRouter, but if you’re looking to whittle down the best choice for you from our extensive list, we recommend checking out our recent best-sellers. There’s certain to be something there for you, from sleek, economy models with speed to burn (like the Linksys E1200 DD-WRT or the E2500 Tomato) to towering networking behemoths that crush every competitor in sight (like the unstoppable Netgear R7000 Nighthawk DD-WRT, or the Dark Knight itself, the Asus RT-N66U Tomato), and plenty in between (like the recently added Asus RT-AC68U DD-WRT).

Celebrate National Cyber Security Awareness month today and every day by joining the FlashRouters family and future-proofing your network!

postheadericon How to Fix Bungie Centipede Error & Unblock Destiny on XboxOne

Fixing the centipede error for Destiny

Bungie Centipede Error for Destiny

If you’re a college student who purchased Bungie’s recently released shooter, Destiny, you’re probably really angry, and you’re not alone.

It seems there are a few external issues that Bungie didn’t take into account when releasing Destiny to the gaming public, one of which being whether college students would be able to enjoy it at all.

In fact, the college student issue with Destiny is so common that it has it’s own name: the Bungie Centipede Error. There’s even a #fixcentipede hashtag floating around Twitter. Learn all about it below, and find out how you can get around it.

What Is the Bungie Centipede Error?

Well, it’s pretty simple: Destiny is an online game reliant on servers that some colleges block for reasons completely unrelated to gaming. If you’re on one of these campuses that blocks the necessary servers for playing Destiny, you’ll find yourself yourself face to face with an error code dubbed Centipede.

That’s the whole story.

How to Fix Bungie Centipede Error & Unblock Destiny for XboxOne

The very first thing we recommend trying is going to the Help page for the Bungie Centipede Error and opening the ports that they recommend opening, if that is possible for you.

Of course, since the majority of those affected are on college campuses, this may not be a viable option, as college campuses don’t exactly make those ports available to every student that wishes to access them. So we have a backup plan…

FlashRouters

The FlashRouters Support Routers Advantage

A FlashRouter used in conjunction with a VPN service is the perfect way around these sort of network restrictions.

A college wired network can’t stop you if you have a top-notch device like a FlashRouter that also utilizes the VPN services ability to circumvent geographical restrictions and improve your online security. A DD-WRT or Tomato FlashRouter will give you the speed and power you need to play Destiny any time you want without any worries about bandwidth. You can even determine how you’d like your bandwidth allocated and prioritize your gaming activities with a FlashRouter.

Of course, where would you be without the VPN service? Stuck behind your college’s network blocking systems, that’s where. If you subscribe to any VPN service on our official supported provider list, we can send your FlashRouter ready to work with your VPN subscription right out of the box.

We do recommend you refer to the rules of your university as using a VPN and your own router may not be allowed even though it can be very beneficial.

Want to know which FlashRouter is right for you? Maybe you should check out our recent best-sellers list or our Routers for XboxOne post to find out which routers are rocking our customers’ worlds right now. There are lean and mean economy models like the Linksys E1200 DD-WRT & the E2500 Tomato, booming networking behemoths like the Netgear R7000 Nighthawk DD-WRT & the Asus RT-AC66U Tomato, and everything in between. Just what you need to create the perfect gaming experience.

“Windows 10 represents the first step of a whole new generation of Windows, unlocking new experiences to give customers new ways to work, play and connect,” said Terry Myerson, executive vice president of the Operating Systems group at Microsoft. “This will be our most comprehensive operating system and the best release Microsoft has ever done for our business customers, and we look forward to working together with our broader Windows community to bring Windows 10 to life in the months ahead.”

Windows 10 adapts to the devices customers are using — from Xbox to PCs and phones to tablets and tiny gadgets — and what they’re doing with a consistent, familiar and compatible experience, enabling even greater productivity. Windows 10 will run across the broadest range of devices ever from the Internet of Things to enterprise datacenters worldwide. Microsoft is also delivering a converged application platform for developers on all devices with a unified app store. Developers will be able to write an application once and deploy it easily across multiple device types, making discovery, purchase and updating easier than ever for customers.

Windows 10 builds nearly everything that businesses need right into the core of the product — including enterprise-grade security, identity and information protection features — in ways that can reduce complexities and provide better experiences than other solutions. One area of advancement is in the work Microsoft has done with user identities to improve resistance to breach, theft or phishing. Windows 10 will also help advance data loss prevention by using containers and data separation at the application and file level, enabling protection that follows the data as it goes from a tablet or PC to a USB drive, email or the cloud.

Management and deployment have been simplified to help lower costs, including in-place upgrades from Windows 7 or Windows 8 that are focused on making device wipe-and-reload scenarios obsolete. Businesses will also have the flexibility to choose how quickly they adopt the latest innovations and influence continued improvements. In addition, organizations will be able to customize an app store specific to their needs and environment. The intent is an app store that will allow for volume app licensing, flexible distribution, and the ability for organizations to reclaim or reuse licenses when necessary.

Technical p review PC p roductivity

The early technical preview of Windows 10 demonstrates new levels of flexibility, navigation and familiarity through the Windows experience. Features include these:

  • Expanded Start menu. The familiar Start menu is back, providing quick one-click access to the functions and files that people use most, and it includes a new space to personalize with favorite apps, programs, people and websites.

  • Apps that run in a window. Apps from the Windows Store now open in the same format that desktop programs do. They can be resized and moved around, and have title bars at the top allowing users to maximize, minimize and close with a click.

  • Snap enhancements. Working in multiple apps at once is easier and more intuitive with snap improvements. A new quadrant layout allows up to four apps to be snapped on the same screen. Windows will also show other apps and programs running for additional snapping, and it will even make smart suggestions on filling available screen space with other open apps.

  • New Task view button. The new Task view button on the task bar enables one view for all open apps and files, allowing for quick switching and one-touch access to any desktop created.

  • Multiple desktops. Instead of too many apps and files overlapping on a single desktop, it’s easy to create and switch between distinct desktops for different purposes and projects — whether for work or personal use.

Open and c ollaborative d evelopment

The introduction of the Windows Insider Program demonstrates Microsoft’s continued commitment to working closely with customers to help shape the future of Windows. Windows Insiders will be able to give feedback on early builds of the product throughout the development cycle. The program will include various ways for Windows Insiders to engage in a two-way dialogue with Microsoft, including a Windows Feedback app for sharing suggestions and issues and a Windows Technical Preview Forum for interacting with Microsoft engineers and fellow Insiders.
