postheadericon Concealed Carrier Has A Great Interaction With Law Enforcement, Thanks Deputy For His Professionalism

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, TEXAS — A concealed carrier was pulled over by a deputy with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office. After he told the officer he was carrying, the officer asked to see the gun. Once he saw it, he thanked the driver for telling him. The law enforcement interaction proceeded without incident. No one was hurt or worried. Everyone went about their day.

via the Austin Statesman

“I was a CHL holder, showed him that,” said the concealed carrier. “He asked me if I was carrying, and I had it in the center console. I showed it to him and he said thank you for telling me.”

The concealed carrier is an Army veteran and took to social media to kindly thank the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office for the professionalism of one of their deputies. The deputy insists he was just following protocol.

“I encourage people to carry lawfully, and to do it the legal way,” Bell said. “Because in an end result, they could help us out.”

I know a lot of concealed carriers have wrote in voicing their discomfort with the idea of getting pulled over. When police pull over a concealed carrier, ultimately, they just want a safe interaction. In discussions with current and former law enforcement, while their opinions on gun ownership and concealed carry may differ from their own personal experience, ultimately they all appreciated knowing the situation.

Now, depending upon where you’re pulled over, you may or may not be obliged to tell the officer. Some officers may prefer to not know. However, a common underlying theme is this: respect.

When you treat someone else with respect and have a regard for his or her own safety as well as your own, you are immediately inviting a positive interaction. It’s a net benefit.

Now every person — including some law enforcement — may not be receptive to that sort of interaction. That is on that person. You control you. It’s a win-win for all parties.

I’m happy to report when something in the concealed carry community goes right. While we love discussing how some concealed carrier saved someone else or himself, the reality for the vast majority of us is that we just simply need to get through the day. Most law enforcement officers I’ve interacted with have never given me a hard time so long as I abided by the law.

Do that and treat others with courtesy and don’t be surprised when the same is given to you. Good deal. Carry concealed every single day, everywhere you can. Know your state laws well enough to know how you’re supposed to govern yourself when interacting with law enforcement.

postheadericon How Do You Hold Your Flashlight? These Guys Offer Some Great Suggestions

The US Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) has a very interesting series on concealed carry readiness called “Into the Fray”. We’ve featured a few of these videos because we felt that they demonstrate key techniques, ideas, and methods that will directly benefit the individual concealed carrier.

In this episode, USCCA editor Kevin McCloskey discusses a few different ways that concealed carriers may use their flashlights.

In the dark, there’s two major methods to use light discipline to a concealed carrier’s advantage:

Spot (“blip”) lighting – This is where you key the flashlight on for a brief moment to orient yourself in your environment and then turn off the flashlight. The flash of light helps you orient while not giving a potential enemy a place to zero on target.

Continuous light – When you find your target, turn the flashlight on and keep it focused on the attacker while you engage. This ensures your aim is precise and on target while giving your attacker the disadvantage.

Major issues brought up in the video: how you hold your flashlight.

There is an FBI method which includes holding the light up and away from the body. This allows you to see your target but ensures your opponent, if aiming towards the light, doesn’t have you in his cross hairs.

Another popular method is cross-arm. This is where you hold the flashlight in your non-dominant hand and overlay your dominant arm in a single-handed grip over top. This provides support to your dominant hand and allows you to keep your muzzle pointed down until your target is confirmed.

Target confirmation is a big deal in a darkened area. Knowing what you’re shooting at is just as important as locating the bad guy.

This is applicable in both home defense as well as everyday concealed carry.

“What if the bad guy shoots at my light?”

This is a very common question which Kevin does an excellent job in addressing. He mentions that some 80% of shots on target miss their mark. While the conditions of those shots may play an important factor, he uses his case to make the argument that it really doesn’t matter how you hold the flashlight so long as you can maintain control of it and your handgun to ensure you can put rounds on target.

Ultimately, we agree on this point.

The flashlight needs to be in a position where it’s useful for you, comfortable for the situation, and effective in helping you navigate and differentiate between friend or foe. Outside of that — and all other factors being equal — there’s no guarantee in a real life situation that the method of you holding your flashlight will have any noticeable effect on your opponent’s shooting.

The most important part is for you to identify and neutralize your opponent. Everything else takes a second place in terms of factoring.

Practice regularly for real life situations you believe you may encounter and definitely practice properly identifying your targets. These are both activities you can do in your home.

Navigating with a flashlight takes time and patience but it ought to be done by anyone seriously interested in defending the life of himself, his family, and his property from bad guys.

Stay safe. Carry concealed.

These streaming video services are growing their libraries all the time, and it can be difficult to tell when new movies are available. With that in mind, FlashRouters is happy to point you in the direction of several worthy new releases on these respective services. Enjoy!

Best Streaming Movies For Any Holiday Occasion

Skyfall: Streaming Video on Netflix Instant and Amazon Prime Instant

Skyfall: Streaming Video on Netflix Instant and Amazon Prime Instant

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Here’s a fun one for the whole family to enjoy; Planes, Trains & Automobiles is a terrific vehicle for Steve Martin and John Candy, whose chemistry carries this road movie about a man (Martin) who must tolerate an obnoxious shower ring-salesman (Candy) as they both make their way for Thanksgiving. It’s almost seasonally appropriate too. (Available on Amazon Prime Instant)

Computer Chess A great little curio of a movie that came out earlier this year, Computer Chess is a dryly funny, faux-documentary about a man-vs-machine chess tournament set in 1980, populated by wonderfully esoteric characters and other oddities. (Available on Netflix Instant and Hulu Plus)

Skyfall Familial-drama-chronicler Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road) seemed like an odd choice to direct the latest Bond movie, but Skyfall finds him admirably more than up to the task. Kinetic and gorgeously-shot, Skyfall handily sets the franchise back on the right track after the misfire that was Quantum of Solace. (Available on Netflix Instant and Amazon Prime Instant)

The Apartment How about a Billy Wilder classic that offers just the right balance of cynicism and faith in humanity, much like most of his work? Jack Lemmon stars as the sweet-natured and put-upon C.C. Baxter who ends up falling for his boss’ mistress (Shirley MacLaine), and the results are bitterly funny and heartbreaking in equal measure. (Available on Amazon Prime Instant)

Diabolique: Criterion Collection - Streaming On Hulu Plus

Diabolique: Streaming On Hulu Plus

Hard Eight We’re big Paul Thomas Anderson fans here at FlashRouters, but even some of us needed to catch up on his stylish debut feature, featuring future PTA staples like Philip Baker Hall and John C. Reilly, as well as Gwyneth Paltrow and Samuel L. Jackson; but catching up is what the holiday season is for. (Available on Netflix Instant)

Diabolique Hulu Plus members can enjoy a tremendous bounty of Criterion Collection movies whenever they want, so this choice might seem random, but we just watched Diabolique and loved it, so we’re recommending it. The twisty tale of a battered wife and her husband’s mistress’ plot to kill their mutual abuser, Diabolique ratchets the tension up beautifully right until it’s surreal, terrifying climax.

Spring Breakers – The latest provocation from Harmony Korine inspired a lot of think-pieces this year, but there’s no denying that there’s something hypnotic and thought-provoking about this loosely structured tale of youthful excess. And yes, James Franco’s performance as rapper named Alien is every bit as memorable as you’ve heard. (Available on Amazon Prime Instant)

Crystal Fairy This casually-paced road trip movie finds self-absorbed American Michael Cera traveling through Chile in search of a notorious hallucinogenic cactus. Insightful, caustically funny, and often sweet, Crystal Fairy is particularly noteworthy for the way it showcases Cera’s considerable ability to play against type. (Available on Netflix Instant)

Rachel Getting Married: Streaming on Amazon Prime Instant & Crackle

Rachel Getting Married: Streaming on Amazon Prime Instant & Crackle

If You’re Willing to Brave the Commercial Mindfields of Crackle

Rachel Getting Married (also available on Amazon Prime Instant) This Jonathan Demme-helmed drama packs an emotional wallop, but if you’re willing to fight through some tremendously uncomfortable scenes of familial unrest, there’s a deep reserve of humor, sweetness, and warmth right underneath the surface. One of the finest films of the last decade, and a tremendous actor’s showcase (particularly for Anne Hathaway).

88 Minutes Less so-bad-its-good and more so-bad-its-astounding, this ludicrous thriller is basically a playground for Al Pacino’s worst late-period acting impulses (and his hair in this movie, my god, his hair). But don’t worry, there’s also plenty of laughably overwrought dialogue, a central mystery that may not even be a mystery, and Leelee Sobieski.  A great choice for the family that likes to mock things in unison.

And Just Because…

Fireplace For Your Home Save your self and your family an extended argument and just throw this on in the background, assuming you don’t have a working fireplace or the will to build a fire (Available on Netflix Instant).
