postheadericon Shopkeeper Critically Injured In Gun Fight With Armed Robber

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO — Late on Thursday night, an armed robber entered an auto shop and attempted to rob the owner at gun point. The owner pulled out his own gun and the two exchanged rounds. During the exchange of gunfire, the owner was hit twice and taken to a hospital in serious condition. The armed robber fled and it is unknown the extent of his injuries.

According to ABC News Channel 13, the owner is believed to be recovering from his wounds. Police are still on the look out for the armed robber.

As a business owner, it has to be especially hard to see your life’s work jeopardized in an instant because some criminal thinks he can take it. Tools, equipment, and most of all — your own life — are all up for grabs when a bad guy walks in the door.

This owner was injured and that is a shame. However, it’s a chance any person takes when he tries to defend himself. It shouldn’t mean we stop trying. If anything, after this man recovers, he’ll probably be more emboldened in his self defense.

Surviving failure is important. Learning from that failure to lessen the chances of it happening again is how we improve.

After a long day’s work, the senses are dulled. The mind and body are both tired. Having to push those things aside to maintain situational awareness takes exceptional discipline and self-awareness. That’s our first tool — our mind. A gun without a mind to use it properly is useless.

If anything, let this be a stark reminder to all those hard workers out there. Just because the end of the day has arrived, it doesn’t mean we throw our guard down. Situational awareness is the one key factor that can tip us off to a threat before that threat is upon us. What we can’t see, we can’t react to. Worse, we’re left in a truly horrible situation of needing to react and, instead, staring down the barrel of a bad guy’s gun.

Don’t be disheartened when a law-abiding citizen gets injured defending his life and his life’s work. It should be a reminder that we’re never ever at the top of our training and ability. That only comes through continuous, ardent practice.

I hope the owner makes a swift recovery. Carry everyday, everywhere.

postheadericon BREAKING: Mass Shooting At Rolling Oaks Mall — Two Good Samaritans Intervened, One Was Killed And The Other Injured

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — There is a developing story of a mass shooting at the Rolling Oaks Mall in San Antonio, Texas. The media is still waiting to be briefed. Law enforcement and FBI are on the scene and securing the mall shop-by-shop.

UPDATE: The Rolling Oaks Mall has been secured by police as of 6:30 PM EST. They are continuing to search for one armed suspect who escaped the scene.

News 4 Antonio reports six victims in total. One is confirmed deceased.

Two Good Samaritans were shot trying to intervene in the armed robbery. The first suspect has also been shot and wounded by one of the Good Samaritans who had a concealed carry handgun. The second suspect escaped and injured several people with gunfire on his way out.

via News 4 San Antonio

An unarmed man attempted to stop the robbery and was shot and killed. A second man pulled out his concealed weapon and shot one of the suspects. The second suspect fled the scene, shooting as he ran. Their conditions have not been released.

CBS Dallas Fort-Worth confirms that it was an attempted robbery on a jewelry store. It is still believed to be two suspects involved. When a Good Samaritan tried to intervene, he was shot and killed. A second Good Samaritan drew his concealed carry handgun and also attempted to intervene but was also shot.

It is still unknown whether the concealed carrier’s rounds are what brought down the first suspect in this case.

UPDATE 2: The concealed carrier is believed to have critically injured one of the suspects before being injured himself by gunshots. As one of the armed robbers fled the scene, he shot additional people (CBS Austin).

FINAL UPDATE: San Antonio Police gave a brief statement for News 4 San Antonio at approximately 7:00 PM EST. They confirmed that the first Good Samaritan who intervened in a botched armed robbery attempt at the Kay Jewelers in the Rolling Oaks Mall was, indeed, killed as a result of gunshots received from one or both of the armed robbers.

A concealed carrier also intervened and critically shot one of the armed robbers before being shot himself. He is currently receiving care for his injuries and our thoughts and prayers are both with him and his family.

The second armed robber successfully escaped the scene and shot several people on his way out. He has not been identified at this time and his whereabouts are unknown. San Antonio Police ask for the public’s assistance in identifying the second suspect.

The first suspect, who was critically injured, is currently receiving medical attention. His status is unknown at this time.

postheadericon Attempted Home Invasion In NY Ends With An Injured Homeowner And Deceased Intruder

ILION, NEW YORK — A local school was placed on lock-down after a reported shooting took place in the near vicinity. When Ilion police arrived at the residence, they found one intruder dead outside. It is believed that the occupant of the home successfully defended himself from the intruder through the use of a firearm.

“What we know right now is that it was a robbery attempt and the suspect entered the home, and the homeowner was able to shoot the suspect,” Ilion Police Chief Tim Parisi said to WKTV.

Police eventually identified the deceased suspect as Dasean Chastine, 24, of Kennedy Plaza in Utica. The homeowner took some damage to his head during the confrontation but was treated for injuries on site and released. This case is being treated as a self-defense incident.

While we commonly regard New York as an anti-gun state, there is a huge difference between New York City politics and upstate New York. In these areas, gun ownership is widely treated in a different fashion than in the five burroughs. That, however, has not translated to a decrease in criminal activity as criminals are under the assumption that occupants of a home are unwilling or unable to defend themselves against brute force.

That assumption didn’t pay out so well for Chastine. Another young man cut down because he took up the wrong profession. However, it’s pretty clear that if Chastine had not been shot, he would have continued to beat that occupant about the head — likely causing serious or maybe even fatal injury. All for what? All so he could take that man’s possessions and feel on top of the world for a couple days?

Well, that play doesn’t work out when you have homeowners who refuse to be victims. By owning a gun and having that gun accessible in the home, you’re able to fight back when bad guys kick in the front door. It doesn’t take an abnormal act of heroism to fight back. It just takes a little preparation.

It’s better to get treated for some minor head wounds and be alive than to have some thug parading around with your stuff in the streets and you’re unconscious or dead in your own living room. That’s not heroism — that’s just wanting to be alive.

Don’t be a hero, be a survivor. Carry a gun every single day — especially in the home.

postheadericon Good Guy With A Gun Saves A Woman, Infant, And Injured Good Samaritan; Kills One Bad Guy, Sends Second Running

SHAWNEE, KANSAS — A mother leaving Walmart went to put her infant into her car when she was approached by two strangers. Both men struck her repeatedly in the head, dropping her. When a Good Samaritan saw what happened, he tried to intervene. He was brutally shot in broad daylight. Thankfully, another man saw what happened to the first and shot the suspect who shot the Good Samaritan. The other suspect fled the scene.

This is a developing story.

The woman and the Good Samaritan were both critically injured. They were taken to the hospital. The Good Samaritan is still in the intensive care unit after receiving life-saving surgery and the woman was allowed to leave later the same day.

via KMBC-TV

“You know our hearts and prayers go out to both of them for a speedy recovery. I know we have many people out right now, many teams of officers and detectives. We had to make contact with the family of good Samaritan number one to get them to the hospital to be with him, but apparently good Samaritan number one is able to talk,” said Maj. Dan Tennis, of the Shawnee Police Department.

Two Good Samaritans happened to be in the parking lot of a Shawnee Walmart at the same time. It’s tragic the first got shot but that allowed the second to know beyond any reasonable doubt that these were two bad guys that needed to be taken out. Judicious marksmanship secured the first and, having no shot on the second, Good Samaritan Number Two held his fire and let police take care of the rest.

The police are still on the look-out for the second armed suspect.

This is why we need you to carry everyday. This is why we train and we stay prepared every single day. Because there’s not enough of us willing to stand up to scum and defend ourselves from violence.

What, pray tell, does a man get when he attempts to rob and injure a mother in front of her infant in a parking lot of Walmart? Where is the ability to diplomatically negotiate that?

There isn’t.

It comes down to the ability to judiciously use deadly force when it applies. And in this case, it most certainly did.

The deceased suspect is believed to be John W. Simmons, III. He was 28 years of age at the time of his passing and from the sounds of it, that was ten more years than he needed.

K-9 officers attempted to track the second suspect but the dogs incorrectly identified the wrong person. The second suspect is likely to remain hidden because he doesn’t have a gunshot wound to tend to. That was his accomplice’s problem.

Judicious marksmanship and the readiness to come to the aid of your fellow man… That’s just a few of the ingredients that makes this country the best in the world. We have the inalienable right to defend ourselves from harm and, in some cases, come to the aid of our neighbor as well.

To both Good Samaritans who stepped up when someone called for help: our sincerest thanks and gratitude go out to you and a speedy recovery to the first man who responded and was seriously injured.

postheadericon Orlando Mass Shooting In Gay Club Leaves 50 Dead, 53 Injured

ORLANDO, FLORIDA — While final figures are still pending, it appears that fifty people have been killed and fifty three injured in an attack on a gay night club in Orlando, Florida, just before closing time around 2 a.m. on Sunday. To be clear, it’s the third attack perpetrated by an alleged Islamic terrorist who has claimed ISIS affiliation in the past two years. While media scramble to figure out how they’re going to spin this story, we’re going to cement the details as they’re presented.

Just before the attacks are alleged to have taken place, the shooter is confirmed to have called 911 and pledged his allegiance to ISIS prior to engaging in the attack, according to NBC News. This and other details have strongly pushed the FBI’s stance in designating this an act of domestic terrorism.

Florida police have confirmed that he does have several firearms-related permits including a concealed carry license and a security guard permit — both of which he actively used in his profession as a security guard.

And that’s where the details pretty much end. As we’ve stated in the past: we don’t care about the shooter. His personal ideology, philosophy, or whatever it was that drove him to prematurely ending the lives of several dozen people are really of little concern.

What is concerning is there appears to be an increase in these types of incidents in the last two years.

orlando-florida-gay-club-shooting-video

  • The first one we covered happened in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the target was a Marine Corps recruiting depot and reserve center.
  • The second was the San Bernardino shootings in a mental health facility, carried out by a man and his wife for supposed ideological reasons.

And now there’s this.

While anti-gun media will focus on what type of firearm the shooter used, perhaps we need to be discussing a bigger picture of how we can better protect ourselves from these sorts of attacks in the future.

The problem is that the government is not good at identifying these types of individuals prior to them executing their vile attacks. We’ve seen it in both domestic terrorism cases as well as just routine cases as well.

The government cannot protect you. You must make steps to protect yourself.

We cannot openly advocate for people to carry concealed while going out into situations that involve an altered state of thinking. That said, perhaps it’s time to have a designated buddy. We have designated drivers when we go out to drink, perhaps we need designated concealed carriers — guys and gals who don’t mind being sober and don’t mind staying equipped with a daily carry handgun.

Before anyone boo-hoos this idea: it’s worked in the past to stop a mass shooting in a bar. In 2008, one bar patron who was legally carrying a concealed handgun, successfully stopped a man who indiscriminately opened fire in a bar. These types of stories don’t fit the media narrative, so don’t expect people to be talking about it all the time — but a good guy or gal with a gun is truly the only defense for a bad guy with a gun. It’s inconvenient for the media narrative, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true.

You can wait for the FBI to identify the next domestic terrorist prior to that terrorist attacking a place that’s arguably a gun free zone… But if you’re holding your breath, that’ll be quite a feat.

The best solution is having a well armed, well trained populace that is knowledgeable and accountable with firearms. Our condolences go out to the families affected in Orlando and we pray for a speedy recovery to the injured.

postheadericon Gangland Shooting In Pittsburgh: At Least Five Dead And Multiple Injured

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA — A coordinated gangland-style shooting left four women and a man dead as investigators allege that the attack came from two separate directions and specifically targeted a late-night backyard barbecue. Pittsburgh police are being assisted by state investigators and forensics as they try to piece together the motive of this brutal assault.

via FOX News

“The murders were planned. They were calculated, brutal,” District Attorney Stephen Zappala said of the Wednesday nighttime shootings in Wilkinsburg.

Police were able to piece together that the attackers used heavier caliber 7.62 x 39mm rounds and reportedly “aimed high” (head shots). Both must have had some experience because they basically herded the entire group into a kill zone on the back porch where most of the victims died.

“It looks like right now they were all fleeing toward the back door of the residence when the second gunman fired from the side of the yard,” said Lt. Andrew Schurman of the Allegheny County homicide unit. “They all seemed to get caught on the back porch.”

It really doesn’t matter if drugs were involved or not. They most likely were but that part really doesn’t matter. We’re dealing with more heavy hitters out there, these days. And these guys aren’t interested in taking prisoners or giving anyone the benefit of the doubt. Police allege that one of the shooters specifically targeted a few of the victims but the remainder were pretty much caught being “in the wrong place, at the wrong time.”

As concealed carriers, we have to realize that throughout our travels, we don’t always know the company that we break bread with. And as such, it is incumbent upon us to maintain a level head and a steady state of situational awareness. Never assume anything.

These shooters acted with a type of coordination and precision that is absolutely deadly in a real-life scenario. When people panic, they bunch up into a herd and they act like animals. In an active shooter environment, don’t bunch up and cluster. Look for cover and hopefully concealment. Return fire judiciously. Spraying and praying does not work. As the Marine Corps Rifleman’s creed loves to remind us,

“My rifle and I know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit…

I love backyard barbecues as much as the next red-blooded American male. In an upcoming article, let’s discuss a few very simple pistol techniques that will give you the option of hopefully being able to get some hits down range when it really matters.
