postheadericon Since Trump Took Office: 11.3 Million Additional Firearms In America

Perceived wisdom has held that firearms sales fell drastically after President Trump was elected. But the so-called “Trump slump” hasn’t happened. Yes, increased production has driven down prices. But sales remain strong. While President Obama may have been the greatest firearms salesman of all time, President Trump’s first year is likely to beat all of President Obama’s eight years in office, except for the last one.

Trump-era NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System) checks are continuing the trend set last year. 2017 is on track to be the second highest year for NICS  on record.

November and December have traditionally been the highest months for NICS checks, correlating with hunting seasons and Christmas. 2017 only needs to accumulate 2,875,681 NICS checks in the last two months of the year to become the second highest year on record. Every year since 2010 has exceeded that number for November and December.

It is more likely that the totals for November and December in will be over four million checks. They have been over four million for four of the last five years. Four million more NICS checks would be over 24 million checks for the year.

2017 NICS checks have been at 91% of the level of the all time record in 2016.

NICS checks are used for both new and used firearms sales. They are used for other purposes as well. Firearms carry permits are rapidly expanding across the United States, with over 16 million carry permits currently in use. NICS checks are used for both initial issue of a permit and for the renewal of permits. Some NICS checks are used for background checks for employment.

Because of the expanding use of NICS checks, the number of firearms added to private stock in the United States is a fraction of the NICS checks. Past calculations based on ATF records indicate that about .56 firearms are added to the private stock in the United States for each NICS check done by the FBI.

If that ratio holds, about 1.1 million firearms will have been added to the private stock in October, or about 11.3 million firearms added in 2017 so far.

It appears the demand for firearms has grown and the number of firearms owners has grown. Polls are a poor way to determine firearms ownership. Many people are reluctant to admit to firearms ownership when there is serious talk of restricting the ability to own or buy firearms.

A recent NBC/Wall Street Journal survey shows gun ownership jumping from 41 to 48 percent of households. That increase includes a component of gun owners who are willing to admit ownership during a Trump administration. It also indicates an increase in the base level of firearm ownership.  Once a new owner buys a gun, they are likely to buy more guns, with different guns for different purposes.

In two months we will know if 2017 becomes the second highest year on record for NICS checks. We do not know at present, but that is the way to bet.

postheadericon Woman Shoots Larceny Suspect After He Tries To Hide In Her Office Building While Running From Cops

KNIGHTDALE, NC — A man was shot after allegedly stealing from a Walmart and trying to make a getaway in a building that housed multiple businesses.

He ran into a lone woman, and he was shot. Although someone committing larceny rarely escalates things to where a shooting is justified, this may just prove the exception.

As WRAL reports:

Authorities were called to a Walmart at 7106 Knightdale Boulevard on for a reported larceny at about 6 p.m. when the suspect fled from the store on foot.

Officers chased the man, identified as Deandre Branch, 24, of Clayton, into an office building at 7048 Knightdale Boulevard. Once there, Branch forced his way inside the two-story building, which houses multiple businesses, and encountered a lone employee inside the building. Police said they are unsure what type of exchange took place between Branch and the woman, but he sustained a single gunshot wound as a result of the encounter.

“The suspect encountered a lone female that was working inside the building. The suspect, in the course of that encounter, was shot,” said Knightale Police Chief Lawrence Capps. Capps said officers were not close enough to Branch at the time of the shooting to witness the encounter.

Branch was taken to WakeMed for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Police said that the woman has been cooperative with the investigation, but her name is being withheld.

It’s hard to know what to do when a criminal — but not necessarily a deadly threat — comes barreling at you.

It’s happened to me twice, and both times while I was under the age to be carrying concealed.

I wasn’t touched once, and I got knocked flat on my back the second time.

You never know what a cornered thief might do.

REDMOND, Wash. — March 14, 2017 — Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday announced the general availability of Microsoft Teams, the company’s new chat-based workspace in Office 365. The new tool for team collaboration is now available to Office 365 business customers in 181 markets and 19 languages.

Customers worldwide choose Office 365 to enable collaboration within their organizations. Since Microsoft announced the preview in November, more than 50,000 organizations have started using Microsoft Teams, including Alaska Airlines, Cerner Corporation, ConocoPhillips, Deloitte, Expedia, J.B. Hunt, J. Walter Thompson, Hendrick Motorsports, Sage, Trek Bicycle and Three UK.

“In a world where information is abundant and human time and attention remain scarce, we aspire to help people and groups of people be more productive, wherever they are,” said Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft. “Office 365 is the broadest platform and universal toolkit for creation, collaboration and communication. Today we are adding a new tool to Office 365 with Microsoft Teams, a chat-based workspace designed to empower the art of teams.”

Office 365 is designed to meet the unique workstyle of every group with purpose-built, integrated applications: Outlook for enterprise-grade email; SharePoint for intelligent content management; Yammer for networking across the organization; Skype for Business as the backbone for enterprise voice and video; and now, Microsoft Teams.

According to Laurie Koch, vice president of global customer service at Trek Bicycle, Microsoft Teams is already streamlining the company’s work by providing assets and tasks in context: “Across Trek’s global teams, the integrated collection of Office 365 apps serves up a common toolset to collaboratively drive the business forward. We see Microsoft Teams as the project hub of Office 365 where everybody knows where to find the latest documents, notes and tasks, all in line with team conversations for complete context. Teams is quickly becoming a key part of Trek’s get-things-done-fast culture.”

Microsoft has introduced more than 100 new features to Teams since November, including an enhanced meeting experience, with scheduling capabilities; mobile audio calling, with video calling on Android now and coming soon to iOS and Windows Phone; email integration; and new security and compliance capabilities. The company has also delivered new features to make Microsoft Teams more accessible, such as support for screen readers, and high contrast and keyboard-only navigation. Making powerful tools available to any developer

The new marketplace provides a central location for developers to find and install components that extend the Microsoft development platform.

Microsoft showed that it continues to bring innovation to Visual Studio developers with a first look at the next version of Visual Studio.

The company also announced the general availability of the Microsoft Graph, offering developers a consistent way to access data, intelligence and APIs within the Microsoft cloud and with a single authorization token. With the Microsoft Graph, developers can tap into the collective power of the Microsoft cloud to create smart, people-centric applications that help companies and end users achieve more with contextual insights. Any developer capable of making an HTTP request can call the API from any platform. The Microsoft Graph is hosted at http://graph.microsoft.com.

Also now available is Azure Service Fabric in public preview, making it easy for developers to build and operate microservice-based applications at scale that fully integrate with Microsoft Azure and Visual Studio. The preview includes support for .NET development on Windows Server, with Linux support expected in 2016.

Providing a developer platform that is open by design

Microsoft’s developer platform is open by design, allowing developers to target any device and platform, including iOS, Android, Linux and Windows. The company on Wednesday released new versions of popular tools that further enable developers to quickly create innovative apps and services.

Microsoft released Visual Studio Code beta as an open source project, available on GitHub. Visual Studio Code is an advanced code editor and part of the Visual Studio family that runs on Linux, OS X and Windows, and has been already downloaded more than 1 million times in preview. The new beta version includes a new extension model with a gallery of extensions for additional features, themes and language support. Developers can learn more at http://www.visualstudio.com.

The company also delivered release candidates (RC) of .NET Core 5 and ASP.NET 5 for Linux, Windows and OS X. With this implementation of the .NET Core for any operating system, developers can start using it in production environments.

Comprehensive tools for team development

Microsoft has been a pioneer in empowering enterprise development teams with tools for agile and DevOps practices including Team Foundation Server and Visual Studio Online. The company today introduced Visual Studio Team Services, an enhanced and rebranded version of the Visual Studio Online service with 3.6 million existing registered users. Microsoft demonstrated the extensible architecture of Visual Studio Team Services by showing a broad catalog of partner extensions available in the new Visual Studio Marketplace, as well as Microsoft’s own extensions.

Microsoft also extended its DevOps solutions into more mobile development scenarios for Windows, Android and iOS. This includes the ability to host cloud builds for mobile applications with cross-platform build capabilities for iOS (in partnership with MacinCloud) and Android. REDMOND, Wash. — Sept. 22, 2015 — On Tuesday, Microsoft Corp. began the worldwide release of Office 2016. The apps are the latest addition to Office 365, Microsoft’s cloud-based subscription service that helps people do their best work, together. The company also announced new and enhanced Office 365 services built for team productivity.

“The way people work has changed dramatically, and that’s why Microsoft is focused on reinventing productivity and business processes for the mobile-first, cloud-first world,” said Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of Microsoft. “These latest innovations take another big step forward in transforming Office from a familiar set of individual productivity apps to a connected set of apps and services designed for modern working, collaboration and teamwork.”

postheadericon New Microsoft Office 365 open source integration with Moodle transforms education technology

LONDON — Jan. 19, 2015 — Microsoft Open Technologies Inc. (MS Open Tech), a subsidiary of Microsoft Corp., together with leading Moodle partner Remote-Learner.net Inc., on Monday announced integration between Moodle and Microsoft Office 365, bringing a more productive experience to teachers and students by harmonizing login credentials, calendar management and course content creation, in addition to other workflow improvements for education institutions and other Moodle users.

“Working closely with Remote-Learner, we’re delivering a technical solution for one of the most popular open source learning management systems that aims to provide seamless workflows for both Moodle and Office 365 users,” said Jean Paoli, president of MS Open Tech. “By working closely with the open Moodle community, MS Open Tech will continue taking feedback and maintaining, improving, and adding new features.”

The open source Office 365 and Microsoft Services plugins for Moodle include integration with OneDrive for Business, OneNote and Office 365 Outlook calendar. The integration allows students and instructors, as well as enterprise users, to sign on to Moodle with the same ID, making single sign-on easier and faster for education institutions and other Moodle users with Office 365 accounts. In addition, events created in Moodle will be stored in teachers’ and students’ personal Office 365 calendars, enabling them to easily track course events and due dates. Previously, instructors needed to update their Outlook calendars manually, or send event invitations separately to students.

Integration with OneNote enables instructors to create assignments in OneNote, students to complete the assignment in the digital note-taking application and submit their work via Moodle, and instructors to provide feedback in the same OneNote document.

Additional integration between Moodle and Office 365 allows instructors to easily embed interactive online lessons created in PowerPoint with Office Mix through an open format standard. These lessons may contain audio, video, digital ink, interactive simulations or assessments. Documents stored in OneDrive for Business can be associated automatically with Moodle courses. Updates to those documents will appear automatically in links in Moodle, streamlining version control and simplifying integration of content stored in the cloud.

On Jan. 21 at the BETT Show 2015, MS Open Tech will officially release version 1.0 of this project, which kicked off last September, on GitHub under GPLv3. The plugins will also be available for download from the Moodle plugins directory, via Azure-certified Virtual Machine image and VM Depot.
