postheadericon Thug Storms Detroit Store Brandishing Handgun, Shows What Happens When No One Is Armed

DETROIT, MI — An armed robbery in Detroit, Michigan, went off without a hitch for the thug looking to make a quick buck.

The store’s lack of armed employees and the assailant’s actions have repercussions for all of us.

Take a look at the story below by The Detroit News:

The man walked into a MetroPCS in the 1500 block of E. Lafayette at about 7:45 p.m. Jan. 15 to ask about a cell phone and “then approached the clerk armed with a black handgun and demanded money from the register,” investigators said in a statement.

He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money, according to the release.

To spur tips leading to an arrest, authorities on Tuesday released surveillance footage of the suspect. He is described as an African-American, age 21 or 22, with a medium complexion, last seen wearing a black hat and dark coat with a zipper covering his mouth.

No one was reportedly injured during this incident, but this still shows what can happen when there is no good guy with a gun ready to stop deadly threats just like this.

We teach the underbelly of our society — we teach thugs everywhere — that threatening the lives of others is not only permitted, it’s rewarding.

A life threatened here without consequence is the seed for more down the road, as is every other violent offense that goes off without a hitch.

There are people in our society that want to affect change not through armed and vigilant defense, but by changing the hearts and minds of those who would do harm.

There’s nothing wrong with changing the hearts and minds of criminal elements of a culture — that’s a great thing.

What activists for gun control don’t see, however, is that the agent of change for the hearts and minds of many — if not most — criminals is the knowledge that good guys with guns are prepared to put them out of commission if they decide to prioritize their material gain over the safety of others.

It’s instilling a healthy respect for consequences for deviant and dangerous behavior — that’s changing hearts and minds.

This store has got to get an armed employee or two in their midst.

postheadericon Intense Video Shows Officer Being Shot Point-Blank, Assailant Sentenced To 35 Years

Being a police officer is a job filled with unknowns, and you’ll see in this video just how quickly a good day can turn bad in an instant.

Officer Quincy Smith, of the Estill Police Department, was responding to a call about a suspicious person at a store. When he arrived, he was told that a man had been trying to steal groceries from customers. He was given a description of the man, and it didn’t take long to track him down.

The officer had a body camera, one that he had purchased himself, on his glasses. That camera captured everything that the officer was seeing, and helped tremendously when it came time to go to court.

His assailant, Malcolm Orr, 29, was found guilty of attempted murder and possession of a weapon and sentenced to 35 years Wednesday following a two-day trial.

In the video above, you can see the interaction between Orr and Officer Smith, and how quickly things turn potentially deadly.

“Come here, man. Come here for a second,” Smith says.

As he gets closer to Orr, Smith notices that he has his hand in his pocket as if he’s carrying a weapon.

“Take your hands out your pocket!” Smith yells. “If you don’t stop, I’m gonna tase you. I’m not playing with you!”

Orr takes a few more steps before finally revealing the weapon — a 9mm handgun — and opening fire.

“Shots fired!” Smith screams, while running back to his vehicle.

“I am hit. I am hit in my neck someplace,” he says. “Dispatch, please tell my family I love them.”

Officer Smith was shot at 8 times, and Orr is just another thug who could care less about someone’s life. Luckily, Smith survived the injuries sustained, and was able to see Orr brought to justice for his crimes.

During the trial, it took jurors less than 45 minutes to come back with their guilty verdicts.

In my opinion, 35 years isn’t enough for the crimes committed. Orr was looking to kill, and should be locked up for the rest of his days.

In closing, I’d like to thank Officer Smith for his service to his community, and am happy that he survived this horrible experience. And, a thank you to all of those who serve to protect. They put their lives in danger each day, and are unfortunately faced with thugs such as Orr.

postheadericon Stalker Shows Up To Victim’s Home, Opens Fire — Gets Hit In Return Fire By One Of The Occupants

LOS ALTOS HILLS, CALIFORNIA — A man from Georgia approached the doorstep of a home where a woman was seeking shelter. The family living at that home saw him approach with a handgun drawn and reported it to authorities. The suspect forced his way into the home and opened fire on her and at least two other residents before one of the residents returned fire. The assailant, 43-year-old William Brady III, was wounded in the exchange.

Local sheriffs deputies found the suspect lying on the ground with a gunshot wound, according to Mercury News. The woman was staying with the residents and she reported that she knew Brady was stalking her. The male resident of the home saw him approaching with a gun drawn and retrieved his own to protect himself and the other residents. Deputies are treating this case as self-defense and no charges are expected.

Brady’s handgun was recovered as evidence and he was admitted to a local hospital to receive treatment for his wounds. He is expected to be charged with attempted murder.

The woman allegedly sought a restraining order against Brady back when she was in Georgia but there is no confirmation a restraining order was ever issued. In Santa Clara County, an emergency protective order was sought for her and the residents of that home and it was granted.

This is why we keep presenting one simple point. If you have reason to believe someone is or may become a threat to you or your household, seek a protective order or restraining order. It’s a paper trail that helps assist law enforcement and it acts as an additional legal blow against your aggressor should he or she violate the conditions of that order.

The hardest thing for people to do is make the right determination whether a restraining order is warranted. It’s scary. It’s like admitting that there is a real threat to your life whereby perhaps you can just ignore that threat by not getting a restraining order. Don’t do it.

Ignoring the red flags of someone who may be mentally unstable and violent towards you comes at your own peril.

This woman followed the right steps and thankfully, when Brady showed up, there was someone in the home with a firearm that could resist him. If there hadn’t been, Brady was clearly intent on murdering the residents of that home as well as his intended victim.

Be safe. Take the proper precautions against a potential threat. Don’t take chances and carry a firearm everyday, everywhere you can. Even California begrudgingly gets it. Your life is worth it.

Watch Wolf Hall Online - Stream one of the best UK shows of 2015

Wolf Hall – Best UK Shows of 2015

As we’ve discussed in the past, the UK is home to some of the finest television programming available. From the BBC to Channel 4, you can find beloved sci-fi institutions, gripping police procedurals, and deft mysteries.

So with that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the best UK shows of 2015, see what we can look forward to this year, and show you how you can watch these fantastic shows from anywhere.

Best UK Shows of 2015

Wolf Hall – For those of you who miss having Homeland‘s Damien Lewis on your TV screen (yes, his presence on the show did coincide with the show’s decline in quality up through the 3rd season, but it could hardly be considered his fault), get ready to watch him assay the role of the marriage-happy King Henry VIII in Wolf Hall. This six-part adaptation of Hillary Mantel’s novels, Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, has been earning rave reviews since it premiered on BBC Two earlier this year. We suggest you catch up.

Luther – The tortured genius detective trope has certainly been worn to tatters lately, but somehow a combination of Idris Elba’s steely charisma and a daringly pulpy sensibility elevated Luther above the pack. It seemed like the show would be on hiatus indefinitely. Then last year, we found out that the show would be returning to BBC America for a two-part miniseries. So yeah, we’re psyched.

Sherlock – Okay, maybe this one is a little bit of a cheat considering that the show is only offering a Christmas special, and will thus be out of the picture for most of 2015, but we couldn’t resist. Fiction’s greatest detective will be returning in one of his most entertaining incarnations (that offered by the effortlessly compelling Benedict Cumberbatch) and bringing Watson (Martin Freeman) and the rest of the gang along with him. Details about the special are scant, but we’re excited nonetheless.

Doctor Who returns for its ninth season.

Doctor Who – Best UK Shows of 2015

Doctor Who – Okay, it’s likely that fans need no reminders that their favorite time-traveling doctor will be returning for a season nine this fall, but any list of the best UK shows of 2015 would be incomplete without it. And the great Peter Capaldi (the twelfth doctor, for those counting) will be back as well. That’s all we need to hear.

Orphan Black – The third season of this tremendously popular series is just getting underway over at BBC America, so time is of the essence if you wish to stay caught up. As ever, Tatiana Maslany dazzles in nine distinct roles as clones at the center of a secretive government program. Catch up on one of the most buzzed about shows on television.

Broadchurch – Admittedly, season two of this show has already aired in its entirety on ITV, but again, this is a list of the best UK shows of 2015, not the list of the Best UK shows of 2015 yet to come. So yes, season two of this gripping crime drama is already several months past its airing, but it deserves recognition nonetheless. And season three is already promised, so get yourself up to date.

Babylon – Here’s another one where kind of have to fudge the rules a little. Technically, the first season of this critically acclaimed show (co-created by Danny Boyle, Robert Jones, Jesse Armstrong, and Sam Bain) aired last year on Channel 4, but it was such a hit that SundanceTV in the US decided to start airing it in 2015. Either way, this comedy-drama that divides its attention between the police officers at the Metropolitan Police Force, and the PR department that has to account for their behavior, is essential television.

Watch the Best UK Shows of 2015 From Anywhere

As we mentioned above, not every one of these shows is available to international audiences. So if you want to be able to access these shows from anywhere in the world, you’re going to need a VPN.

A VPN service, or Virtual Private Network service, is a subscription-based service designed to make your sensitive online information as secure as possible. When you log into your VPN, all of your data is tunneled through encrypted servers set up all over the globe, thus keeping them away from cyber-criminals and snooping governments.

But what does this have to do with watching UK shows outside of the UK, you may be asking. Well, VPNs are also useful for accessing geographically restricted websites. When you log into your VPN, you have the option of choosing the encrypted server of your choice. When you do, you’re given an IP address in the country of the encrypted server you chose, which makes your internet-capable device think it’s in that country.

So all you have to do is log into your VPN, pick a UK server, and voila! You’ll be streaming the BBC and Channel 4 as much as you’d like.

Just about any VPN worth its salt will offer plenty of UK servers, and we’re affiliated with A LOT of them (as our official supported provider list attests). If we had to pick favorites, we’d tell you that terrific VPN service providers like Overplay, HideMyAss, IPVanish, and PrivateInternetAccess are serious favorites around the FlashRouters office, and offer top-notch UK coverage.

Enjoy the Best UK Shows of 2015

postheadericon Oil and gas industry investment in digital technologies shows resilience in oil price downturn, Accenture and Microsoft survey reports

HOUSTON; Apr. 22, 2015 – Despite current lower crude oil prices, most companies in the oil and gas industry plan to invest the same amount or more in digital technologies, according to a new survey by Accenture (NYSE: ACN) and Microsoft Corp. released today at the Microsoft Global Energy Forum 2015. Survey respondents included international oil companies (IOCs), national oil companies (NOCs), independents and oilfield services firms.

In the near term during the current low crude price cycle, approximately three out of five respondents said they plan to invest the same amount (32 percent) or more or significantly more (25 percent) in digital technologies.

Over the next three to five years, approximately 80 percent of the oil and gas industry professionals surveyed said they plan to invest the same amount (18 percent), more (44 percent) or significantly more (18 percent) in digital. Respondents from IOCs and NOCs were the most bullish in the same time period.

Mobility, infrastructure and collaboration technologies currently represent the biggest investment areas across the oil and gas industry. Over the next three to five years, investments are expected to increase in big data and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and automation.

The key for continued digital investment in the upstream sector is improving operational efficiency, rather than simply reducing cost, as faster, more informed decision making and a more efficient workforce were seen as the key areas where digital technologies are adding value and creating business efficiencies. However, to get the most value from digital technologies, oil and gas industry leaders say they need to overcome several barriers, with workflows and processes that create bottlenecks and physical and cybersecurity issues topping the list.

Approximately 89 percent noted that leveraging more analytics capabilities would add more business value, 90 percent felt more mobile technologies in the field would increase value, and 86 percent said that leveraging more IIoT and automation would boost value. Collaboration technologies were highlighted as an area that could be increasingly used in upstream to create a more efficient workforce and to make faster decisions.

“Oil and gas industry leaders continue to look to digital technologies as a way to address some of the key challenges the industry faces today in this lower crude oil price cycle,” said Rich Holsman, global head of digital in Accenture’s energy industry group. “Making the most of big data, IIoT and automation are indeed the next big opportunities for energy and oilfield services companies, and many are already starting work in these areas. They are increasing investments in enabling people and assets, with a growing emphasis on developing data supply chains to support analytics projects that can improve efficiencies, manage cost and provide a competitive edge. Our survey tells us that companies who do not continue to invest in digital technologies risk being left behind.”

“Mobility and other digital technologies are gaining traction as oil and gas players learn to use these technologies to make faster and better decisions from the field to the front office,” said Craig Hodges, general manager of the Gulf Coast District at Microsoft. “Predictive capabilities to optimize maintenance and maximize production can create value, and digital technologies also support better use of scarce resources and talent, management of more complex work, cost reduction efforts and innovation to remain competitive and continue operating safely.”

The Microsoft and Accenture “Oil and Gas Digital and Technology Trends Survey 2015,” conducted by PennEnergy Research in partnership with the Oil & Gas Journal, surveyed industry professionals worldwide, including engineers, geologists and mid-level and executive management from the upstream, midstream and downstream segments.
