SUMMERFIELD, FLORIDA — Having a gun gives us at least a fighting chance in the event that a home invader manages to get in. One couple recently realized just how important it is to be armed.

“The fatal shooting was reported at 10:30 p.m. at a house on SE 158th Place in Summerfield. According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the home in connection with an armed home invasion.

The victim said that he was about to go to bed when four masked people entered his home and injured his dog.

“I just heard my back door get kicked in and next thing I know, my dog ran out and I heard a gun shot,” the victim said. “And the next thing I know, a guy was meeting me at my door with a gun, stuck the gun in my door. I slammed the door and the gun just started going off.”

The victim said that his girlfriend, who was in the closet at the time, threw the shotgun to him so he could defend them.

He shot one of the intruders, who was identified Wednesday as Shawn King, 32. King was dropped off outside the Ocala Health Summerfield Emergency Room, where he died.

The homeowner told reporters that his dog, Zeus, is recovering after being shot in the head during the invasion.

I read one time that just the fear of being shot is often enough to dissuade criminals from targeting certain homes. Do you believe it? Leave your comments below to get the discussion going. I would say that those invaders, and a lot of others, don’t take that into consideration. Then when they stumble upon a home with armed occupants, it’s probably going to be a bad day for them. BEECH GROVE, INDIANA — Two armed suspects were fatally shot outside a bar and eatery in Beech Grove after they attempted to rob a mother and son security team patrolling outside the area.

According to a statement by Beech Grove Mayor Dennis Buckley, one of the suspects was identified as 29-year-old Seth A. Easley and the other was a 14-year-old boy who has not been identified at this time.

“The child demanded everything you have from both security guards, including a cell phone that was laying on the lap of one of the security guards,” Beech Grove Mayor Dennis Buckley said.

The security team were in a vehicle outside the eatery. The time of the event was around 1 o’clock in the morning. After the 14-year-old and 29-year-old criminals were seen roaming around the entrance of the establishment, security rolled up. One of the security members began calling 911 when the duo were approached by the 14-year-old. The teenager brandished his gun and demanded their possessions. The security team fought back, engaging both suspects with their handguns.

While the Beech Grove mayor recalls this event as a tragedy, it highlights the reality of crime in America. The bad guy may be little more than a kid with a chip on his shoulder, a stolen gun, and something to prove.

In either case, both the boy and his gang handler are dead.

We’d love if the story ended with something else less absolute than death but the sobering truth is that if that boy wanted to live in the first place, he shouldn’t have shoved a gun in someone’s face.

Security guards and store clerks — these are the most common recipients of gang violence because they’re visible and often in places that are poorly protected. Surprise, surprise, these are also the two groups of people that are investing heavily in their own personal protection.

Concealed carriers sometimes get caught in this mess, too. A lot of gangs send young boys off to conduct armed robberies and malicious criminal activities as a means to “prove their worth”. Much like child soldiers are employed in extremely poor countries, we’re now seeing this tactic brought to America.

As a gun owner, it only means one thing: if you’re not carrying everywhere you go, you’re setting yourself up for failure.

I don’t pretend for a second that some 14-year-old boy understands the full ramifications for his actions if he’s stupid enough to point a gun at an armed security guard.

Does this kid — who never took a gun safety class in his life — understand what happens if he applies just a tad more pressure to the trigger? How much does it take for a loaded gun to go bang?

I carry concealed every single day and I suggest my reading audience do the same. I train with my concealed carry gun because I understand precisely how much pressure it takes to make a handgun fire. The answer is not much. And if it’s a teenager pointing a gun at me and he’s nervous enough, I know my life is as good as gone unless I plan on defending myself.

I want to share with you that Kevin Turner has been offered the opportunity to become chief executive officer at Citadel Securities and as a result will leave Microsoft. Kevin has made a tremendous impact at Microsoft over the past 11 years. He built the sales force into the strategic asset it is today with incredible talent while at the same time more than doubling our revenue and driving customer satisfaction scores to the highest in company history. I have learned a lot from Kevin over these past few years and wish him all the best as he takes on this broader CEO role.

For the past year, Kevin and I have spoken a great deal about the transformation we are enabling our customers to drive. We have come a great distance, and we need to continue to reach for the next level of customer centricity and obsession in everything we do — sales, marketing, services and product development. It’s very important to have “one feedback loop” across all parts of the company with customer value and satisfaction at the center. This means we must operate, learn and continuously improve collectively. To this end, with Kevin’s departure, I have made the decision to more deeply integrate the current SMSG organization into the rest of Microsoft and form one unified senior leadership team. As a result, I am pleased to announce the following changes are effective immediately, and I appreciate that Kevin will stay with Microsoft through the end of July to help with the transition.

  • Judson Althoff will lead the Worldwide Commercial Business, which will focus on the commercial segments, inclusive of EPG, Public Sector, SMS&P, DX and Services.
  • Jean-Philippe Courtois will lead Global Sales, Marketing and Operations, which span all of Microsoft’s 13 areas across our North America and international businesses as well as the global Marketing and Operations organization.
  • Chris Capossela will lead the Worldwide Marketing and Consumer Business, which includes CCG, MSA and PSM, OEM, and Microsoft Retail Stores, in addition to his current worldwide marketing team.
  • Kurt DelBene will now also lead IT and Operations, in addition to Corporate Strategy.
  • Amy Hood will now also lead the current SMSG finance team and WWLP, in addition to the central finance team.

Jean-Philippe and Judson will report directly to me and join the senior leadership team starting today. Jean-Philippe will take full accountability for the Microsoft North America business also starting today, and Judson will remain as acting lead for day-to-day operations until a replacement for him is announced. Together they are working on a plan for the functions comprised in today’s Worldwide Marketing and Operations team, given it will span both of their organizations in the future.

This year, I had the opportunity to visit more than 20 subsidiaries across five continents where I saw firsthand how each subsidiary team drives business in the context of Microsoft’s mission, ambitions and culture as well as our core ethos of adding economic value and opportunity in every country and society we operate in. These teams are doing great work, and I think we can position them even better for the future.

There is no doubt the world is changing — and Microsoft must evolve with it and ahead of it. Microsoft’s mission is universal, and I believe our values and high ethical standards are timeless. But we must apply them in a world that demands more solutions that are local in nature. Growing globally requires local capability to leverage all of Microsoft’s innovation, marketing and operations in the context of local opportunities and partnerships while overcoming constraints. This means we must do better at surfacing and trusting the insight from local teams on what it takes to drive our customers’ success. At the same time, we must empower the local teams with world-class global support.

The new tutorial, now available at https://www.code.org/mc, introduces players to basic coding within the fun and popular “Minecraft” environment. Created by “Minecraft” game designers together with Code.org, the tutorial features Steve and Alex from “Minecraft” and “Minecraft”-inspired challenges that will be familiar to its more than 100 million players around the world.

REDMOND, Wash. — June 29, 2015 — Team Red, White and Blue (Team RWB), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting U.S. veterans, today announced that it will be conducting the second annual Old Glory Relay presented by Microsoft Corp. Microsoft is committed to leading and challenging the technology industry to inspire and develop veterans for robust job opportunities.

Registration is now open for the relay, which will celebrate Old Glory at every stop, and raise awareness and critical funds for the organization and the veterans it supports. Along the route, Team RWB will bring together local communities, Veteran Services Providers, corporate partners, student veterans groups, and local Team RWB Eagles to connect and strengthen the networks that work with veterans to inspire empathy, create action and have impact toward closing the civilian-military divide.

Supported by the local communities along the course and by virtual supporters from across the nation, 59 teams will move Old Glory throughout the 3,400 mile course. The relay will be held over approximately 60 days, commencing in San Francisco on Sept. 11 at sunrise, and concluding in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 8 at sunset.

Each day will begin with the American flag being unfurled and entrusted to the day’s first runner and will end with the last runner folding the flag and storing it for safekeeping overnight. During the relay, the flag will be passed from runner to runner along a pre-determined route, with no less than 50 miles traveled each day. Teams of runners will carry the flag for a day, as well as choose how many runners to use and how far each runner will run. A celebration will be held every day of the relay, to allow towns along the route to participate in meaningful way.

The route cuts directly through the heartland of the country. Route decisions are made based on safety, appropriateness for running, landmarks, and interest in key cities and areas.

“We believe that the Old Glory embodies all of the characteristics we embrace from teamwork and camaraderie to perseverance and sacrifice,” said Blayne Smith, executive director of Team Red, White and Blue.
